Medical versus Recreational Marijuana: Is There a Difference?

January 29, 2021/0 Comments/in Medical Marijuana Health & News /by Muhammad Junaid

Medical marijuana is the drug of the centuries. Its first use can be traced to ancient China and Greece. However, where marijuana has been used for pain relief and treatment of illnesses, it has also served as a recreational drug.

Many states have legalized medical marijuana following increased scientific justification for its healing potential. In most of these states, the recreational use of marijuana is allowed within predefined limits. Cannabis gummies, high-tech vaporizers, and marijuana-based foods are all legal, provided THC levels don’t exceed 3%.

But What Is Medical Marijuana?

In a marijuana farm, there is no distinction between medical and recreational marijuana. A single marijuana plant comprises hundreds of chemicals called cannabinoids. Each cannabinoid has a specific effect on your body.

The two well-known and evidence-backed marijuana chemicals are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). During processing, the amount of these chemicals in a marijuana product can be adjusted, and this is where the debate between medical and recreational marijuana begins.

Medical Marijuana Has More CBD and Minimal THC

CBD is the principal marijuana component cited in scientific research to be of medicinal value.

THC, they say, has little healing properties. It gets you high.

So essentially, medical marijuana is CBD, and recreational marijuana is THC. But there can never be a product that has either of these compounds in exclusivity. So medical marijuana, even with a 3% THC composition, can have several ‘recreational’ properties as we explore here.

The Benefits of Medical Marijuana: Is It CBD or THC?

You no doubt will have to comply with the THC rule in your state when you get medical marijuana prescription and start using the ancient herb. But given the current evidence-based medical benefits of marijuana, it’s clear to see that both CBD and THC play essential roles. The line between medical and recreational weed has always been blurrier.

Pain Relief: Thanks to THC and CBD

Millions of people struggle with chronic pain. These include lower back pain, arthritis pain, and pain following fractures in car accidents or slip and fall accidents. These are some of the conditions that can qualify you for a medical marijuana card in your state.

But while scientists emphasize the medicinal superiority of CBD, it is THC that numbs the pain. THC is the compound of marijuana that gets you high. It numbs the pain by inducing momentary bliss. As that happens, CBD focuses on reducing inflammation. A combination of both THC and CBD thus leads to effective pain relief.

Weight Loss: Thanks to THC and CBD

Many studies show that medical marijuana has great potential in increasing metabolism and regulating insulin. When considering weight loss, one must pay attention to causative factors like stress, poor sleep, and addiction to sweets.

Both THC and CBD play an essential role in reducing your body’s stress hormones and helping with relaxation. The resultant better ability to sleep may improve your ability to lose weight fast. Continued use of marijuana reduces your brain’s response to rewards. The cravings go, and this can be incredible for weight loss.

Treating Side Effects of Cancer and HIV Medication: Thanks to THC

It can be difficult to sustain the use of certain medications, including chemotherapy, antidepressants, and antiretroviral drugs. Common side effects that often lead to discontinuation of medication include loss of appetite, nausea, anxiety, and insomnia.

Today many patients are turning to medical marijuana to treat these symptoms and help them continue with medication. THC has been found to increase appetite and improve sleep. CBD helps to reduce the symptoms of these conditions by reducing inflammation.

Remedying Depression: Thanks to THC and CBD

Depression is so common these days that one may not even know that they have it. But the symptoms are hard to miss, top among them hopelessness, sleeplessness, and continuous lethargy. Medical marijuana has been found to alleviate these symptoms and help people with depression cope with the condition.

Its main role is the reduction of pain and anxiety. That involves getting you a little high to reduce stress and signaling the brain’s prefrontal part—the emotion processing hub—to be less anxious.

What Does It Mean?

Medical marijuana, the kind with low THC level, can also have recreational properties such as:

  • Good feelings
  • Increased appetite
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Relaxation and better sleep

Recreational marijuana, basically, a raw weed that hasn’t been extracted, can also have medicinal properties such as:

  • Improving metabolism
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Optimizing the efficiency of antidepressants, anticancer and antiretroviral drugs

The above brief overview shows that in all the healing properties of medical marijuana, both CBD and THC play different, vital, and inalienable roles. It is just that one compound has been studied more than another. It is also inarguable that large amounts of THC can do you more harm than good, so every doctor or researcher will advise you to watch out.
