You must have a medical marijuana registration card from the New York Department of Health to legally purchase cannabis in the state. To apply for a card, you must first have a recommendation from a licensed medical marijuana doctor. Schedule an appointment with one in-person or online so they can go over your health records, verify your condition, and determine what you have done to treat your condition in the past. Conditions the doctor will be looking for are those that cause chronic, debilitating pain, spasms, seizures, or anxiety. Specific conditions include ALS, Huntington’s, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, and AIDS. If the doctor believes you would make a good medical marijuana patient, a recommendation will be issued and you can then apply for a registration card. If the state approves your application, you will receive your card in the mail within seven business days and may use it to buy medical marijuana at any licensed dispensary in the state. Nearby dispensaries include Columbia Care and PrestoDoctor, both in Rochester.
